Engagement at Court
An engagement is usually the last step in a relationship before the big, final one that is meant to last forever. That’s what a woman assumes when she accepts a proposal and that’s what a man promises when he makes it. But does that mean changing your mind about the engagement is equal to a breach of contract?
In the US, a woman who obviously thinks so sued her ex because he called off the engagement and she was actually awarded 150.000 Dollars by a court!
On the one hand, it’s a slightly absurd illustration of how litigation-happy Americans can be. On the other hand, it serves as a nice reminder that an engagement is a promise that shouldn’t be made lightly, by no man and no woman. You should be certain that you want a wedding to follow the engagement, or hearts will be broken.
