Is it emancipation, the pressures of the working world, or people’s high standards? Why are there so many singles today? “Single - a documentary film” tries to get to the bottom of these questions.

We think the issue is as simple or complex, as obvious or strange as each individual single’s life. Ask any singles you know, and each one will give you different reasons for being single.

But despite all the complexity, life has become a lot simpler for singles nowadays, thanks to the internet. Maybe things just used to be simpler because the options were limited?

A bunch of international singles are stranded on a group of desert islands in the middle of the South Pacific:

We were thrilled to discover that the mixtape genre has been revived online, no doubt to the joy of young lovers. Now we’re even more thrilled about a new blog dedicated to a subcategory of mixtapes for lovers: mixtapes from ex-boyfriends. Okay, some of them are mixtapes from girlfriends, but generally it’s boys who make mixtapes.

Unlike most blogs of this type, the style of writing is beautiful, almost literary, and the posts bring back that feeling of being young and in love, complete with goosebumps from listening to the mixtape from your lover for the first time. The music selection is also pretty fantastic - no trace of Celine Dion - and you can listen to each tape in its entirety.

Seeking a good wife? Then build yourself a time machine, because the demands on a good wife obviously used to be a lot higher. Boing Boing found a questionnaire from the 30s which rates a good wife according to her behaviour, made up of positive and negative scores.

Hardly surprising: today, not even a “good wife” passes the test. But then most men probably wouldn’t consider it a major drawback if a woman doesn’t dress for breakfast (!) and most could probably deal with a woman who wears red nail polish (that CHEAP hussy!).

Actually, cancel the time machine, just try seeking a good wife who is also a modern woman and you’ll be fine

Fathers looking for a relationship have it easy - they know that, whatever happens, they have their kids to love them unconditionally.

On the other hand, fathers looking for a relationship don’t have it easy - what if the kids don’t love Daddy’s new girlfriend as unconditionally as they love him?

…well, think again! While clearing out the magazine archive, we came across an article about the love life of various animals. It’s a pretty gripping read! Fun facts about animal relationships:

- Did you know that Albatrosses live monogamously for years and keep flying back to the same relationship, even after years?
- Gorillas aren’t adventurous lovers, either. Female Gorillas only mate with one man in their entire life.
- Bowerbirds, on the other hand, have pretty high standards. The females inspect their man’s nest before even considering a relationship. If it isn’t pretty enough, they move right on.
- There is an amazingly long list of species who get by without males altogether. There are quite a few insects and reptiles that procreate without any help from men. (more…)
